Mercat Nou in Ibiza: fresh, quality produce

We are in Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean which, together with Formentera, Menorca and Mallorca, forms part of the well-known Balearic Islands.

You’ve probably already seen photos of its white houses, crystal-clear waters and Ibiza’s hippy markets. However, you can’t miss a visit to one of the most emblematic places on the island, where you’ll find local, fresh, top-quality produce.

This is none other than the Mercat Nou, located right in the centre of Ibiza town. An authentic space where the local life of the Ibizan people is reflected and where you can take the best of the island’s gastronomy with you.

History of the Mercat Nou de Ibiza

This building dates back to 1978. It was at the end of the 1970s when Ibiza needed a more modern and larger space to offer both locals and tourists a place to buy fresh, quality products.

Before its creation, the city’s main market was located in the old quarter, but population growth and the increase in tourism meant that this space became too small. Until it became what we know today as the Mercat Nou.

The Mercat Nou is characterised by being a covered market, designed to house a wide variety of stalls selling local and fresh produce, such as meat and fish.

What can you find in the Ibiza municipal market?

Among its streets we can find different stalls offering a wide range of products, from fish to fruit and vegetables.

Fresh and local produce

One of the main attractions of Ibiza’s Mercat Nou is its range of fresh, local produce. Here, visitors can buy seasonal fruit and vegetables, many of which are grown on the island itself.

And because it is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, you can buy freshly caught fish. Also, don’t forget to pack the most typical local meat and sausages.

At Mercat Nout, quality and flavour are guaranteed with every purchase.

Handmade products

In addition to fresh produce, the Mercat Nou de Ibiza is an ideal place to discover a variety of artisan products:

  • Wines
  • Artisan cheeses
  • Handicraft pieces

You can get your hands on unique products and take home a nice souvenir of Ibiza.

Gastronomic delights

Among its stalls, you can find small delicacies that reflect the island’s rich culinary tradition. From sausages such as sobrasada ibicenca, to typical sweets such as flaones and orelletes.

Some stalls even offer ready-made tapas and dishes, allowing tourists and locals alike to sample the specialities.

How to get to the municipal market?

The Mercat Nou de Ibiza is strategically located in the heart of Ibiza town, making it easily accessible for both residents and tourists.

Local buses stop close to the market, and it is also accessible on foot from various parts of the city. There is also a car park nearby for those who prefer to arrive by car.

The market as a reflection of Ibizan culture

Over the years, the Mercat Nou has become a fundamental pillar of the island. It is a place where the essence of the past converges with the present, offering a first-hand insight into Ibizan life.

Ibicencans are proud that this place is so popular because it keeps alive the artisan techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation.

Before leaving Ibiza, don’t hesitate to visit the Mercat Nout, a place where you can feel the essence of the island through its flavours, smells and colours.
